I haven't had any luck in finding a used gas tank for my XJ. Does anyone know if any other Yamaha gas tank will fit? THX

You might have to do a little "adjusting" to fit most other tanks. Best bet would be a tank form an '80 or '81 Special, as they use the same Octopus vacuum-controled fuel-flow system as the XJ. Drawback is that they hold less gas.
A tank from a Standard will hold about the same amount of gas as the XJ, but won't blend in with the XJ lines. You may need to re-plumb the ful line system.
In either case the fuel level sensor is different than the XJ, so the reading will be inaccurate or won't work at all.
So another tank will work, but depends on your definition of "fit"...nothing else is a bold-on-and-go replacement.Jerry Fields

tank
I had to go to the local bone yard to get a tank. And like all my luck they only had one XS/XJ1100 tank and it was in horrible shape. BUT, they did have a XS750 special tank that bolted on like a dream. Only trouble is that I have to get petcocks to fit that tank. the XS1100 ones were too big. A plus is the tank looks better on my XS than the old tank.

gas tank
I won an ebay auction on a 'used' tank from N.C., they also had an N.O.S. at the same time but I figured as long as the old was near the new- why pay more? Hopefully this week the tank will show at my home. Next stop (:-( )- brakes, calipers and the like. The rebuild saga continues...

Let me know when you get the XJ together and we can plan a little ride since you and I are locals. All that is left on my XS is a little minor adjustment and cosmetics.1978 XS1100E "Flashback"

gas tank, brake calipers, zen and the art of M/C maintenance
The previous owner had to 'bleed out' the brakes (F & R) to allow the bike to move. I went to a local shop and ran this by the mgr who said- refill and check action, if the brakes don't work then a rebuild is in order (master cylinder and/or calipers). I'll see what the problem is here in the near future. Jeff- hopefully we will ride soon, Kevinsudd- I will holler if I need those schematics.___________________________

parts is parts
You know, timing really is everything. Here if I woulda waited a couple of days I would have been able to help out a fellow XS/XJ bro' by buying a gas tank, but lo, it was not in the cards. I hope he's in no rush to sell the parts as my rebuild happens as cash flow allows. Here's to the good life!___________________________
