  • Project Bike

    Hello all:
The old '80SG is nearing the completion of its second wind. I found this old bike here locally in Bozeman, MT last year. It was stock right down to the ugly buckhorn handlebars and huge round mirrors. I did a quicky rattle can paint job on it last summer and rode it. This winter I decided to do things a little better. Here are the results. I still have to have the seat recovered to update its look, and I will be getting a Kerker 4-1 this week to finish things out. Now if the mud and snow would just dry up, we would be in business. Things are a little treacherous out there now.

Healthy is merely the slowest rate at which you can die

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Thanks for the compliment, RUSH. I got into airbrushing late last year, and this is my first attempt at a full bike tank. Most of my time was involved in that. I also added the brakelight, turn lamps, headlamp and the rest of the black paint then. The mirror got put on after I couln't see the Belgrade City Police cruiser behind me...
I think the airbrushing came out pretty good. It is hard to see the fire and metal tear effect in the photos, but that is the way it goes. I like it anyway.

The airbrushing is not really so much hard, as it is figuring out light sources, color mixes, etc. Airbrushing is mostly really strategic making and placing of stencils. Other things, like the skull, are done mostly free hand. I bought a couple of books, and watched a couple of youtube videos, and as you know, a picture is worth a thousand words. I also found out it is worth spending money on good brushes and paint. Then the rest is just practice. I have done quite a bit of automotive painting, so the black base/clear was not bad.
I have not yet figured on a style of this bike yet. It is definately not a cruiser, sport, or cafe bike. I am leaning more toward street fighter? I learned that .40 caliber Smith&Wesson bullet shells make perfect engine hardware caps, when cut down and polished.

What videos did you find on that? Any suggested readings??

The book I found the most helpful was a book by Jo-Anne Bortles, I think. It was called something like "Airbrushing techniques" or something. As for recommended videos, just look for what you want to paint (if you want lightning, search for "airbrushing lightning), etc). There seem to be youtube videos on airbrushing just about anything.
I didn't notice that reflection until after I posted. But you ought to see me in the morning!I have found that all the women around (wife included) do not seem to be very impressed with my artwork. They did suggest butterflies....

Actually, the stock mirrors for the 80 Special were rectangular.

I stand corrected. But the round ones that were on it were ugly, IMOP! The one thing that they were good for, was that you could see the police behind you.
