  • No Key Needed Gas Cap Mod

So after looking around and not finding the instructions regarding how to remove the tumblers from the gas cap lock on my 80 Special I simply dug into it.
It was crazy stupid how simple that mod is. Remove the two screws that hold the lock and little slider in place. Use a pick of some sort to retract the keeper at the back of the cylinder. Remove the cylinder. Use the pick to easily pull out the three pieces that must be the tumblers and their small springs. Put it back together and you are done. (Take an extra 30 seconds to clean the underside of the cap while you are theref.)
Now my new ignition key works with everything.
Hoping to fire it up for the first time Saturday.
I need to post pictures! I know I like seeing everyone else's projects and pictures.
This forum is a great place.

You coulda just taken the gas cap to the locksmith (or the local yamaha shop) and had them re-key it for you. Definitely more expensive, but a lot more secure too. I worry enough about some grown man running off with my bike, I definitely don't want to have to worry about some kid dumping something in the tank.

You could have also rearanged those tumblers to fit that key that best. And anything extra sticking out over the housing you could have grinded down flush. That way you know your key will be the only thing able to open it up. Now if any kid just happens to mess around and stick a screw driver in there.... Well you know the rest. Oh your ignition key is set up sort of like that too. Just incase you or someone else was wondering. I always make my keys to fit everything if I run into that problem. I even have a key that works two different atv's. If I could I'd just have one key to everything. House, Car, Bike, Atv, Garage. Well you get the idea.

my tank did not come with a key, I found it laughable to see how easy it was just to push the locking mechanism back from the front of the petcock and bingo it popped open.

I am instead going to install this little guy in there instead.

I am not really worried about it being tamper proof to be honest plus I think it would look pretty cool.

Yeah that's cool. And I bet that cap has a built in vent.

Speical tanks are easy to open up with out a key. But try it on a Standard tank. You'll be there for a while.
