Hi My bike has been running rough ( has a putt putt sound) it started all of a sudden i though maybe electrical so i cleaned all connections again, put new plugs in ,snipped the coil leads checked pick ups, then while i was playing around with the vaccum line from the pick up i found this in the tube near no2 carb it looks like a jet is it possible to have come out of the carby??

Well, yes... that came out of a "carby"... but not one of our carbies.
Stuck in the tube near number two carb?

Now, I assume that you know how these things work... vacuum advance, I mean.
That vacuum line from the pick-up/advance unit is suppose to run up and plug into that port that ONLY carb #2 has. That is sort of a "ported" port, if I may call it such. It doesn't get full vacuum. Sort of restricted.
Now then.. we've all seen bikes where that vacuum line is hooked up incorrectly. Meaning, some boob has hooked the advance mechanism vacuum line to the nipple on the intake manifold instead of to the port on carb #2.
Now.. I've seen crazier things before...
And I'm not there to see your bike nor how it was set up... or whether the vacuum lines are correct, etc.
Was this vacuum line plugged into the manifold of carb #2 instead of the port on carb #2?
If so.. then it's possable that some previous owner... who had the vacuum running from the manifold... stuck that jet in the hose to restrict the amount of vacuum that the manifold supplied to the advance unit in order to make it run better.(better than just off of open vacuum)
Doesn't really matter at this point.
The jet you found isn't needed... and you now know, which you probably did already, that that vacuum line gets plugged into the little port on carb #2.

          Did that cure the problem?

His mentioned "puttputt" sounds sounds like it's not running on all four.
Let the bike warm up and spray some water on the header pipes.. see if they all "sizzle" the same.

I put one in my line, since the advance mechanism was going crazy just off idle. Looked like and epileptic crack head with parkinsons. It smoothed out the vacuum signal, and the advance mechanism works smoothly now. I wonder if the rapid wobble of the advance isn't what causes the wire to fail a bunch???

the problem was there before .i was just checking for vacuum leaks when i found the jet. the header pipes all seen to get hot at the same time no2 is proberbly the coldest , i put new plugs in ran for a few minutes then took them out no4 was wet the rest were black and sooty. not much of a test but maybe a problem ive got new mikes xs coils coming just to get rid of the 30yr old ones, also just curios but what is the compression (psi) suposed to be standard motor and does it change with the 1196 bore kits. thanks

hi randy i was just on your tci home page and i noticed in your diagnosis that you mention the tip over switch which got me thinking that the couple of times this putt putt sound i got was when the bike was on its side stand running and once it happened when i was turning a sharp bend both happened to be left hand side (turn and stand) can you tell me where this switch is and can i run ther bike without it

You might want to check out the vacuum advance repair. Before I fixed mine, the bike would occasionally putt-putt if I tried to apply any throttle. Idle was okay, but gas consumption sky-rocketed and I had little power. Then I repaired it incorrectly (switched wires) and spent a year fixing everything else until I went back and repaired my repair...

                      Hey John'O,

The tipover switch is under the gastank, between the frame rails, just above the coils, says UP or such on it, can't remember exactly right now, but you can unplug it to bypass it.

"no4 was wet the rest were black and sooty."

if u have 1 wet ur not getting fire to it. as for number 2 the coldest. did you use a temp gun to check that reading? it is the sure fired way to check a bad coil.
