Valve Shims

I haven't dug into the top end yet, still waiting on a tranny pan gasket before I flip the bike back on to it's wheels. I've just back-cut the dogs for first and second. I plan on going in to the top end and checking the valve clearances after I'm done with the transmission.

I'm curious to know whether the valve shims for the '79 XS Special and an '84 Venture Royal the same? A quick search of Ron Ayers fiche shows different part numbers, but the exact same fisch. I just happen to have a fairly large collection of Venture Royal shims from years back.

I don't think they are the same. I DO know the XS uses the same shims as some of the Suzuki or Kawasaki bikes. I have a few sizes at home, and I'm about 40 miles away, give or take....

I think the Kow and Suk shims are .5mm bigger diameter. They look like they will work, but they don't.

They DO use the same size in some of the "dual sport" bikes. I trade wit ha local indy shop all the time.

The answer is no.
Your '84 Venture uses 25mm shims, same as some early Hondas and a lot of the Triumphs.
Your '79 XS uses the 29mm shims, same as a lot of early Kawasaki's and newer Kawa's, like Ray mentioned, the KLR650 Dual Sports, etc.

Kawasaki never used the 29.5mm shims.
Only those boobs at Suzuki did.... for their GS series.

I believe some Volvos take the same size shim (29mm)

So much for saving a few $$. I'll just leave those old Venture shims in the back of my toolbox then, and start a new box for the XS.

I don't know if this will help, but the XS11's Valve Shim Library is alive and well! I used it just last week, and it only cost me postage for the three shims "to and from". That was a whopping $2.64 ! Give John a PM and take advantage of his generousity in managing the library.
