  • Final Drive Leak

    Greetings all
Has anyone ever changed the seals in the final drive? Is this hard to do and are there any special tools needed or would I be better off replacing the drive.
I took my newly aquired 79F for a short trip yesterday to burn off fuel with Seafoam additive. When I returned, I noticed oil on the left tire and it looks to be coming from the final drive. Also, if anyone has a spare final drive and wants to sell, please let me know.

Make sure it isn't just coming out of the vent cap on top.

My '80 LG did the same thing when I first started to ride it. I DID change the oil, but after a little bit, it quit. The oil level is still in the "good" range, so it may have been just a little high, and as Tod said came out of the vent cap.
If you DO need a final drive, I DO have a good spare, as I've converted to a 750 final on one bike, and am doing it a this bike soon. Send me a pm if you need the part, and we can talk off line.

          Final Drive Leak

I drained the oil last night and am going to refill, clean tire and take her for another spin to see what happens. I can't go very far as this bike still has the original tires on it so wish me luck.

              maybe shock

Before your next test ride be sure shock on that side is completely oil free as well. Had mine leak and noticed only because it collected on the drive.

When you are ready to reinstall the fill and drain plugs, wrap the threads with teflon/plumbers tape. I have found that the gear oil will migrate past the threads and can get onto the tire. It is impossible to overfill the drive, as it will flow out of the fill hole. When I did my FD swap, I opened up the old drive, just to see what made it tick. The vent is actually a small hole drilled into the housing that originates in a cavity near the axle and vents at the top of the drive. The only way oil will spill from the vent is if the drive is getting overheated, and the oil expands enough to be forced all the way to the top. There is a seal around the output splines where the wheel engages the FD, and there is a chance it could leak there.
