  • will not start after engine swap

I have a 82 XJ1100 that dropped a valve, couldn't find a motor for same model so I bought a 78 or 79 1100 motor out of an XS, motor is real tight exhaust ports clean, everything hooked up fine except ing. wiring and the sensors and wiring are not even close to the same. Motor will not fire , anyone have any sugguestions would be greatly apprecaited. Really love the bike, rode it for several years and would like several more. Thanks.

    Welcome

First off Welcome to the site. I know nothing about XJ's and relatively little about XS's. I am learning lots on this site, as the people here are very knowledgeable and willing to help out. Hang tough and someone who knows will chime in soon enough. Until then you could try the search on this site and see if you can find anything on the subject. Good luck.

Did you re-use all the electronics (Alternator, rotor, pickup coils, etc) from the XJ, or try to use the stuff off of the XS?

          Hey CO1954,

As Tod said, with the older XS engine, but you didn't get any of the other electrical ignition parts with it, you'll need to swap ALL of the ignition and charging parts from the XJ engine onto the XS11 engine. Your XJ carbs should be okay, I'm assuming that the XJ is otherwise stock, airbox and exhaust.

The XJ's ignition timing is ALL in the TCI/black box, just has a vacuum sensor box above the carbs. The old XS engine uses both centrifugal and vacuum advance timing components. SO...you need to use the XJ's timing cover components on the XS engine so that it will match your XJ's system!

The XJ's charging system is a little more robust than the XS's, it uses a brush style alt vs the OLDER XS brushless system. You'll need a pulley puller to get the old rotor off as well as the XJ's to make that swap. IF you haven't ever replaced the XJ's charging brushes, it would be a good time to do so while you're in there.
