  • Exhaust Leaking at joints

Hi guys, I was wodering if or what you guys use to seal up the joints where the header pipes join into a 4 into 1 header? I have a pipe that is a Kerker and the pipes slide into the main pipe and they seem to leak when downshifting or deceleration. Is there something you can use to seal these up? Thanks, your thoughts are appreciated!!

    exhaust leak

Auto parts stores carry a type of thin heat activated exhaust tape that can be wrapped around the header outlet, then the tailpipe slipped on. I've done this with my Mac 4-1. Although on my Kerker, I just used a good hose clamp. If the clearance is too small for this tape, Permatex makes some high temp gold sealant that would work.

Thanks for the info, I was looking at that Gold Permatex and wasn't sure if that would work. I'll use that. Thanks again, I appreciate it. Cameron

I hate it when my joints leak, so I try to remove all of the stems first!

the best exhaust sealant is "Acoustiseal" by Walker. It is black and nasty and only comes off your skin with several applications of MEK, but it is great stuff. Heat won't touch it. I am not familiar with how the kerkers fit together, but if the header pipes slip into the collector, just a thin smear around the male end will seal it well. Used it on hotrods with the dangling header pipe (mustangs with hookers I think??) where one of the pipes slid in so it could fit around the sterring shaft. It never leaked. It is also great stuff in lieu of exhaust gaskets. It never fails like header gaskets or exhaust gaskets do.

If nothing else, it makes good war paint, if the Mohican's ever attack.

Well, I'll say one thing about you guys, you're never boring! Thanks for the tips and I'll see if I can remove the stems from my joints so they don't leak!!! I appreciate all the feedback. I think I got the info I need! The warpaint idea was good too! Thanks again!!! Cameron

I just installed some JC whitney muffs on my special. Tightened the clamps to that point where I knew if I went past the bolts would break. Yup! The joints leaked.

Used the Black sealant Ivan recommended: No leaks.

He's right about getting the black stuff off your hands/tools. Use nitrile gloves.
