    another transmission question

    Im sure this has been answered before but I wasnt able to find the info. Can someone tell me the gears and their part numbers that need to be replaced to fix the jumping in 1st problem? I understand that other gears should be replaced also I just couldnt find this info. Its on a 82 XJ1100. I have all the gaskets bought. Thought about the dremel fix but Im having some help from some members on here and I thought it would help with time. Thanks again.

    You can find them at this yamaha link. Just type in your model and year.

    1st gear (fiche # 15) P/N 2H7-17211-00-00
    4th gear (fiche# 19) P/N 2H7-17241-00-00

      It seems second gear is much mroe common to go out, soooo...as long as your in there, you may want to do 2nd and 5th as well. Depending on who is coming over, they have dremeled a gear or two as well and be able to help you with that if you find 2nd and 5th to be worn badly.

        For some reason, the Xj seems to have 1st gear problems, while the XS has 2nd gear problems. As shown, the gears can still be purchased, but by the time you fix everything in there, it will probably cost more than the bike is worth. 4th and 1st mesh together, so you can't replace just one of them. 5th and 2nd mesh and those will more than likely become aproblem as well.

        So.. if you have more money than time, new gears is the way to go. If you have more time than money, read up on the Dremmel fix and fix the gears you have.

          Anyone have the part numbers for all 4 gears needed. I dont have lots of money but I really want to not have to worry about this repair. Not sure what the cost is I might change my mind when I find out.

            The gears you would need are available, but the part numbers I have listed are probably changed from -00 to -01, as they have upgraded them.

            #15 2H7-17211-00-00 1st gear
            #19 2H7-17241-00-00 4th gear
            #23 2H7-17221-01-00 2nd gear
            #26 2H7-17251-00-00 5th gear
            Hope this helps. The gears are about $90 each, and available as of two years ago. Don't forget to check the shift forks, as you may have one bent or worn.

                Next time go to a MOTORCYLE PARTS dealer.. not the guy on the corner in the 'hood..

                      Which dealer did you go to? I have found that the Yamaha dealership in liberty seems to be a little better.

                        I went across the street from Thoroughbred at Advantage Powersports. They dont have anyone there that knows about bikes. At least not older ones. But I have a connection their that can get me a discount so I will give them another try with these part numbers. I just keep putting off spending the money.
