This may seem like a dumb question, but I want your opinion..
If you had the motor out of the bike and the cases split to fix the transmission among other things, would you replace the crank bearings while there, or simply put it back together and go with it since it hasn't had any problems there thus far in 40k miles.
In this scenario, imagine you are fairly strapped for cash and trying to do this as "Economically" as possible.

, I would surely throw it together as is. Now, that depends on how much money you have into the tear down to start with, as in, how much in gaskets and parts will it be if you have to repeat this in another 20-30K miles, versus how much for the bearings? IF brearings alone is all that is needed, and they cost less than the gaskets and possible machining if you spin one, then no brainer to change them out now.
