XJ key code

Is there a place on the XJ that has a code for the ignition key listed??
A key is one of the things I didn't get with the bike.
I have looked around for a post that deals with this question but most deal with the XS and key numbers on the face of the lock.
Am I going to have to pull the ignition and head to the smith or is the code stamped on the ignition or is it part of the serial number (vin)???

According to the XJ site, the number is on the bottom of the ignition switch, so it has to come out. If you bring the switch to Yamaha or a good locksmith, they will be able to make you a key. HTH

Mines an XS,so I guess I cant say for the XJ.However when I bought my bike iit had no keys.I took the number right off the gastank lock (the top)and the locksmith looked it up and cut it from code with a gun.It works in all locks on the bike.

I just checked,all my locks have a 4 digit number on them and that is the one they need.It cost me like $23 dollars for the first one.

I've done this on a couple of bikes as well. It's better to check all the locks to make sure the codes are the same. If not take them all with you and a good locksmith can re-pin/wafer the lock thats different most times if it's the same keyway.

I had one that the ignition had been changed out and I had only taken the seat lock with me... Some of those codes are right on top of the ignition and fuel cap. The seat/helmet lock one was on the back of it under a plate.

I have a friend who owns a lockshop and made a key for my SF in about two minutes. XJ didn't leave me any clues.
Have to dig in and see if all of the numbers on the XJ are the same.

I was able to take my XJ1100 ignition switch into a locksmith and get the proper key cut. If I remember correctly, there was a sticker on the bottom of the switch with the code on it.

The easiest way is to take the tank to a locksmith and have them pick the cap lock, then disassemble the lock and read the wafers to determine the code, you can do this with the other locks,but I've always found the gas cap the easiest to deal with. You have to watch out though because not all locks are created equal so they don't have all the wafers that the ign. lock has. Then we have to do a progressive cut and that can get expensive, because you have to pay for all keys used even if they don't work. When dealing with a locksmith make sure you have a good understanding of his estimate before you give him the go ahead, because a simple job can really add up fast.

Mine didn't have a key to begin with either. The PO dropped the price for me because of that

I took the ignition switch out and looked long and hard at the small sticker on the bottom of it, and managed to figure out the number. I did some looking online and determined the standard format for the number, so at least I had an idea of what I was looking at. It was SUPER HARD to read, but changing the lighting and angles, I was able to read it. I took that number (and the ignition switch) to the local bike shop, and they made me a key in a few minutes. Cost me $8. They told me that they could have made the key from just the ignition switch, but that would have cost $30. I lucked out, and all the locks on my bike matched.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to dig that ignition switch out and look for the code there first. Only has 11,9XX on the clock so anything that was put there should still be there....Hope, hope hope...
