Joe, there are three forks. One is obviously smaller than the other two, that is the third gear fork ( i think it is called that) and goes into gears on the main shaft that is still in the bike. As to which direction, well it should be fairly obvious when the pin goes into the shift drum if it is or is not square to the drum. If not turn it over. The other two mesh with the gears you just gorund. What I noted is that where they mesh with the shift fork shaft the "sleeve" is longer on one side than the other. In both cases, the longer side goes to the outside of the bike. So again, it will be obvious when they are square to the shift drum, so you have to play with them to figure it out form there. Thats the way I remember it anyway. Look for a thread by adam79, I think I posted some pics there that show my shift forks in place.

Hey there Catotonic...........fix that rear brake problem, butalso get into the habit of using that front brake..........all thetime. That is your main stopping devise. The rear is to be added in conjunction with front brake. Using the rear as the main stopping brake is sooner or later going put you down and all here don't wanna hear of that happening. Better yet, take the riders course.........you'll be in for a rude awakening and will live to ride longer. That's just my 2cents and 40+years riding experience . I hear you. With the linked brakes though, the foot brake works both the front AND the rear. I actually feel a lot safer using the (fully operational) foot brake than just the hand brake, since it's actually half the braking force. I will be taking the MSF course this spring, and have actually thought to myself this week that it may be a good thing that I have had to rely on the hand brake, to train myself to use both at the same time.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Hey Joe,
Did you get it back together yet? I went through Indianapolis twice this week. Probably be back in the next week or two if you need help.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I have not had a chance to jump back into it. We just had our first child and it is hard to find time right now to say the least. I should be able to put some time into it this weekend. Plus I am all of the way over by the airport...Thanks for offering!1979 XS1100 SF

Congratulations on your new addition!!!
Obviously I understand the priority. I am sure you can get it on your own, just remember that you may need to turn the rear wheel while you slide it in to get things to mesh up.
And I have projects in Greencastle, logansport, Bloomington, Anderson, Noblesville......
So the airport is no big deal. I used to work for Cinergy (back when it was Cinergy) so I am somewhat familiar with Plainfield.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Hey Joe, congrats on the gears!! It is a challenge for sure.
As to brakes, the fronts have always gone easy for me, the back I have always (2 times so far) used a vacuum pump to pull fluid through to the caliper. Good luck on that part!
BTW, if you have not already flipped it, make sure you run it through the gears before you button everything up and flip it back over. Its alot easier to correct an errant shift fork or something like that before you go to far with reassmebly.Last edited by DGXSER; 04-19-2009, 09:06 PM.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
