    How many XJ's?

So I know that it's been asked a hundred times, but I cant fine it using the search feature. I have a 1982 xj1100j. I have been told it's kind of rare, but I want to know how rare. Anyone know how many were made in 1982 with the 1100 in it? Thanks. -Joe

Well.. they were rare in that they were only sold for one year in the U.S. and two more in Canada, but there were many thousands made.. I just don't know the exact number.

There was a thread going for awhile for people to post their serial number. The highest number to report was 10M-008118. That would make it #8018 produced in 82. Not what I would call extremely rare. That doesn't include the Canadian bikes because they were numbered differently.

          AND...

In this case, rare doesn't mean worth more... it simply means harder to find many parts! lol.

Still mad about that OEM tail light I missed by minutes on Ebay.. &*!!%$)

So if AI ever decide to sell it, pushing the fact that it's rare wont get me far huh? I was just wondering, and I remember now about the serial number thread. Thanks guys. -Joe

                Hey Tod,

They come up quite a bit. I set up a "1982 Yamaha XJ1100" search on eBay and get alerts when anything for the bike comes up. And I've seen tail-lights more than once.

I'm still interested, by the way, in figuring out how to get a brighter bulb in there. I tried an LED bulb but it wouldn't work properly.

                best,

                  Hey LEON,

Have you looked at the site I posted about in the LED conversions? They have some fancy separated bulbs...the LED panels are separate from the part that fits into the socket, so that you can position the LED bulb array, and get one that is quite bright with lots of LEDs and then have the bulb attached with wires separate so that you can still use the OEM socket to plug the thing into!

Tod, a new user shadowvts just posted about an XJ he'll be parting, you might be able to get a rear light housing from him??

It's not that I haven't seen tail light lenses, but they are all in the condition mine is in... .AGED. They get cloudy over time and get fine cracks especially in the top white part of the lense. YEah, I have buffed it, but it doesn't last. I have only seen one "New" OEM and I missed bidding on it by @ 5 minutes. It went for $10.50!! Want me to tell you about the brand new in the box fuel tank I missed because of my internet connection that went for $53.00 ?? That was probably close to 2 years ago now and I still get mad thinking about it. lol.

Anyway... I guess I should have stated clearer what I was looking for in a tail light lense.. Something much better than what I presently have! lol. As far as the bulbs themselves, my lense has actually melted some due to the heat of the twin 1157 bulbs. I bought some new LED style bulbs off ebay that have @ 30 LEDs on each bulb. It took me a couple months to get around to installing them.. and they didn't work. By that time, it was past the "30 day guarantee" that the seller had, so I was SOL. I have also been into my local auto store and have found a large assortment of 1157 bulbs in blue, amber, red.... but no white?? I would like to try them to reduce the heat more than the amperage draw. If my flashlights I buy are any indication, the brightness shouldn't be an issue?

If you don't have something like this, try it - it's how I win most of my auctions:

The trick is to set it to your max and then let it run. I still miss out on stuff by 50 cents, which really means that I didn't lost it by 50 cents, I lost it to someone else who had a higher max amount.

                          XJ1100 Rare???

TRBIG made a very good point about rare not necessarily equalling value. I told my friend that I was going to purchase an XS1100 Special that was in excellent condition for 1100 dollars. He said it was way too much regardless of condition and that he had a 82 XJ1100 that was more valuable because it was a limited production bike. Well NADA rates the 80 XS1100 at a much higher value than the 82 XJ1100.......So what is more important value or the
pleasure of the ride that you own. Value only means one thing, how much is it worth when you part with it. Like stocks, the value does not mean anything at all until you sell them.......

                            82 XJ1100 stock number

I also own an XJ 1100 that is not running. The body is in excellent condition and the bike only has 15K miles on it. Now the question is am I better off parting it out or spending 400-500 having the engine rebuilt/replaced. Does anyone know a good and reasonably priced motorcycle mechanic in the Northwest that works on Yamahas. Does anyone out there have a good working engine with low miles that is for sale? Repaied the bike would be worth 1200-1400 dollars, parting it out about 1000 dollars but a lot of work and a lot of mailing. Does anyone out there know of a good set of chrome pipes for a 1980 XS1100Special? There was a new set on Ebay for 300 dollars
but I want to keep the price closer to 100-150 dollars max......Thanks

If it only has 15k miles on it, what makes you think it needs to be rebuilt or replaced?

Rebuilding one.. if you mean re-boring and new pistons.. would mean 1k dollars MINIMUM, and that's with you doing the teardown/install.

Are the XJ headers/mufflers you are planning to use in good shape? Someone may want to do a swap.
