I thought it was one of the bottom hose connections on the oil cooler all this time that was leaving a few drops of oil on the floor but it turns out to be the cam chain tensioner. Specifically the center little black circle. Is that thing plastic? Can I remove it and reseal it with permatex or something.

mine is leaking the exact same way. only about a drop or two a day it seems. i haven't really looked into it yet but it might be an easy fix, I'll post after I check it out further.
BTW, at least I know I'm not the only one who has this leak, at least its the only leak on the bike.'80 XS1100sg "MadMax"

Yep - they do that!
Same here ...was a bit of advice a week or two ago as an aside to another thread. Haven't tried anything yet as it's pretty minor and I have bigger problems to look at (Carbs yeuuchh).
Consensus seemed to be to pop out the blanking plug - which I think was said to have a metal centre - so you can be a bit more brutal - and seal with high temp silicon sealant (not bath sealant!!).
I'd take out the tensioner first and tap it out from the back. Don't forget to retension the camchain as the book - ie at TDC I think.XS1.1 sport - Sold June 2005 :-(

I've had my XJ1100 for about 9 months, and I recently had a similar problem. It seemed to drip only when on the center stand, but the front of the engine was all gunked up. Got to checking and discovered that I didn't have a plug at all! Ordered a new one from http://www.powersportspro.com . Shipping was more than the plug! No more drips, though. They are a great source for parts.Roger Tucker

I popped out the the blind plug on my 79 Standard, degreased it and the tentioner and resealed it with Yamabond #4. I ended up doing this on my 80 special too.
