  • Any1 done straight pipes on an xs11spec?

Hey people i'm just full of questions but i was offered a chance to have some pipes built for my xs11spec. It's a 79 model and a friend of mine that runs metric customs in clinton oklahoma, offered to build me an exhaust manifold. He said he'd have to use my stock exhaust for the engine mounts but everything else he could make.

So my question is, how would this thing sound with just straight pipes tuned right? Would anyone know of a youtube vid that would resemble the sound i'd end up with? Anyways, just curious. Thanks fellas!
Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

Just remember that the stock header pipes are double walled if he's thinking about just cutting and welding new stuff to them.

As for just straight pipes, without some sort of back pressure in the pipes, you'll never get the motor tuned right.

      Why bother.

My system has a hole in it and its nothing but loud. Remember you'll have to retune all the carbs and possibly re jet them too. These bikes were big power cruisers in their day and were tuned from the factory for maximum torque with the stock system. If you are going to go after market make sure you are keeping the back pressure up to keep the power. Otherwise the bike will just be loud and you'll lose power and gas mileage. And with the dinky 3.5 gallon tank on the special you'll be stopping every 30 minutes to refuel.

Little late, but straight pipes are LOUD, I mean very loud. Makes my GTP with 40 series flows seem quiet. Luckily I found a 2nd XS with a 4-1 exhaust on it, so I swapped that over.

The straight pipe setup I have is a 4-2 with header wrap. Looks nice (if you like that look), and allows a center stand/oil cooler, but my neighbors would hate me if I left it on.

I had a Maxim 650 with straight pipes. Ran poorly, was loud and annoying, even with ear plugs. From a block or two away it sounded like an old self-propelled combine with no muffler. It was bad. I finally put on a Mac 4/1 and it was night and day different. More power all over, smoother, more economical, and it kicked at 5000+. You may be disappointed with a set of straight pipes. Quiet is good.

How much backpressure is needed? Would it be that hard to have a custom exhaust made? Maybe custom pipes with an aftermarket muffler.

If yer runing straights in place of your muffler make it so that they are overly long. Start th bike and take a grease pensil and run it from from the start of the exaust manifold all the way down to the end of of the exaust tip. As it heats it cooks off the grease mark and where it stops cookin is where you are gonna chop it. Usually hits right on the money with the right amount of back pressure. Generally you want 4 puffs workin its way out within the length of your exaust @ any given time while @ idle.
