I'm just not sure how I got here. What started as a simple get-it-running project has metamorphosed into something else entirely. The beast within has reared it's ugly head and keeps chanting in my ear...."if some is good, more is better, if some is good, more is better, if.......".

It seems like everytime I do something (eg try to roll the bike into a different position with locked calipers), it leads to something else (front brake overhaul) which leads to something else (take off the forks to have the lower legs powder coated black (and while I'm doing that I might as well do the calipers in a nice copper color for contrast)) which leads to something else (new fork seals, dust caps and replacing that axle pinch stud I stripped, anyone got a spare?) which leads to something else (polishing and painting the wheels which someone on this site so graciously reminded me are going to look like crap next to the pretty forks and calipers (and ss brake lines of course)) which leads.... (well, you know how it goes, I don't want to preach to the choir)

And that's just the front end!! Where does it stop?!! I'm not sure how much more I can take!!! (sure is going to be nice when I'm done though!)

Other than that I am fine and actually enjoying this journey into creative expression and I have all of you to thank for that.......I think!!?

So with all that said I thought I would include a couple of pics to let you all know where we are at the moment.

I've got a stack of parts to be powdercoated, prepped, primed, painted, polished (and all the other p's) but there is a decent list of things that are already done:
clutch extra plate mod completed, carbs reworked, seat recovered, mid/final drive fluids changed, new tires ordered, et al.

The reward: a nice bike and that nice little inner glow you get after doing something you didn't really think you could do. Thanks again and I'll post progress as it occurs.

      pinch bolt stud

You can get one of those axle pinch studs at Ace hardware or such. Hey, you forgot to take the engine out!

        randy - thanks for nothing
phil - I was really hoping no one would notice

actually I was thinking about doing the 2nd gear fix even though I've never had a problem with it but I'm not sure about getting into the gear box (never done that either). Based on what I've read here, there seems to be 2 schools of thought on that fix - the dremel fix and the washer fix. Any experience with either? TRook

If it's shifting fine, I'd leave it alone. When it does fail, all the work can be done on the centerstand with the engine still in the frame. If you were to do it now, it would be much easier. By that I mean either flipping the bike over or removing the engine. Myself, I've never seen a '79 that 2nd gear didn't eventually fail, so fixing it now or later is your call. I always go with the washer swap. If you got the coin, new gears is the way to go, but dremel working the gears is also ok, just gotta make sure you do it correctly. New gears with the washer swap would be my first choice, second choice would be dremel fix with washer swap.

The bike looks good so far. The good thing is that you will know the bike thoroughly. It is your work. You will be able to rely it on long distance rides and if anything quits on a ride, you will know what to do to fix it. When you really take ownership in these things, they give you a real sense of satisfaction when you ride! I rode today for about 70 miles and I am sure glad I did... When you are finally finished with the overhaul, the only sin will be NOT riding it.

You could always paint the rims using the Duplicolor Metal-Cast paint. I really want to do that to my 78standard. They Have a REALLY NICE smoke/gunmetal color. They will look really good! Can't wait to see what your bike looks like!

I'm with you Rookie, take the high road and fix up what you can now, while it's apart, it would suck to have to rip it apart again and then do it. I'm not sure i'd rip into the tranny if it hasn't shown any problems though.

Here is a brief update on the progress of the beast.

                    The front end progresses nicely.

Wheels are painted a 2 tone metalflake charcoal (suggested by a member) and gold, disc centers are PC'd bronze

The rear is set-up for R-1 shock modification and has had a 750fd installed. I am going to put the shock on the left side as I figure the diff housing is probably as over-engineered as the rest of the bike and I don't want any problems with the shock fouling the brake hardware on the other side. Also with the top shock mounting bracket I am making it will leave all the suspension adjustment screws accessible.

Hopefully I should get the wheels on this weekend so I can move the beast to make room for the other animals in my growing stable.

                        Hmmmm...

I've never seen a rear swing arm with support gussets welded to the bottom of it like that. Did you do that?

Pastor, hadn't planned on changing the fuse box, do I need to?
Yes, I re-enforced the swingarm to prevent twisting on a single R1 shock installation. I figured gussetting the bottom of the SA was as effective as the top and provided less interference with brake brackets and shock mounting et al.

Nice work on the gussets! Do you need to replace the fuse box? Hahahahaha! Get ready for a bunch of replies! It is probably the single weakest link in the design of the XS1100. TopCat sells a replacement that is far superior to the old glass fuses. If you don't do it now, you'll probably be doing it at some point in the future out of neccessity.

The fuse box upgrade is a must in my opinion. Its cheap, easy to do and it looks like it was made for the xs if you do it right.
