  • Electrical starter Problem

    G'day,

I got to the stage of being ready to test fire the '81 XS1100R I recently bought.

I was getting a reluctant winding of the starter but intimitant and then dead. (A mate was fiddling with the leads to his jump pack) In searching for loose connections I eventually found two disconected single leads behind the fuse box. These two leads are 1 white with blue stripe and 1 black are bound together off the loom which comes down from under the tank from the handle bars.

The white with blue stripe single lead married up easily to a corresponding wire to the flasher unit.

But the black one has no mate to plug into. I cannot find a vacant female black lead to plug it into. Which logically would have to be very close to the rear of the fuse panel as that is where the male end stops.

    Both leads are male connections.

Indicaters will not flash and the starter button is dead.

Can anybody tell me where I should be looking for the black female end lead. Or at least where the missing lead should be please?

All other electricals working, even the low fuel light. lights, pass, high beam it's all a go.
    ...the depth just varies!!!

    Worked it out

I have worked out it is a wire for the indicators.

got the starter button going and winding over fine. Just got to get her to fire.

AusLone - If it's turning over but won't fire you might try pulling the plugs out, lay them up against the valve cover, hit the starter and see if you're getting spark. If you are you might check the orange and grey wires that feed the coils in case they got switched around. Also, this thread has a wiring diagram for an 80G - not identical, but it might help - http://home.att.net/~phase3/XS11/XS11G_US.GIF. You can use ctrl + in your browser to zoom in on the image, and it's pretty legible. It shows the orange wire feeding the coil for 1 & 4, and the grey feeding 2 & 3.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
