  • Ohio to Texas

Bought a bike in Ohio and then (and only then) realized how far it is from Cleveland to Houston. Any body making that trip (or anything close) anytime soon or know of an economical way to get from point a to point b.

    All assistance and suggestions appreciated.

I posted before about this, but what I thought about doing was rent a small truck like a Ford Ranger that gets decent gas mileage. A local Enterprise rents them for $25 a day, unlimited miles. You'll need a ramp and some straps though.

Go get it now before the Arabs cut oil production and gas prices go back up...

      Alternate shipping.

I didn't read through the whole site, but they do mention motorcycles.
Price for package shipping on Amtrak is about half of UPS or FEDEX if I recall.
Amtrack ships to about anywhere their trains go, but not all stations handle shipping. (I wanted to ship something to Denver, but couldn't use my local Amtrak stop... would have needed to drive it up to the Seattle station/depot, first)

        Texas -

Tod's idea is probably the cheapest. According to google maps it's 1364 miles from Houston to the mistake on the lake. Figure 25 miles per gallon in a small pickup and $2 a gallon for gas and it comes out to $113.66 each way plus the cost of the rental. Probably take three or four days if you rent the truck in Houston and drive both ways which should get it there for a little over $300, plus food, stops, ramps, etc. If you can find a convenient ditch to back into, sometimes you can dispense with ramps, but I wouldn't count on it. Additionally Cleveland gets hit pretty hard with lake-affect snow this time of year, so it could be messy.

Prom's idea is probably the most convenient. Ride the train up, load the bike, and ride the train back. Probably a lot more expensive too.

You could always try a post on craigslist under transportation in the Cleveland area, but then you're dealing with unknown quantities.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Or it could be a one way rental up there, drop off the rental and ride the bike back.

              Texas Rookie,

Timing is wrong for now. "2009 Road Trip" will begin in Jan.

Is Ohio bike for parts or are you just getting excessive??

XSive to the max, Larry, XSive to the bloody max!

Actually I thought it would be nice to have a touring rig (my 79) and something a little more over the top custom-wise. I'd like to try my hand at painting etal and didn't want to mess up the factory finish on mine.
