1982 XS1100 Maxim Questions

Newbie here with a few questions:

I have a 1982 XS1100 Maxim in my basement. I have been the only owner of this bike. The bike only has approx. 6000 miles. I quit riding it in approx. 1995 and parked it. In approx. 2000 I had it serviced and put a few miles on it. I havent cranked the bike since approx 2002.

I'm considering getting back into riding. I assume it will take quite a lot to get it into safe riding condition again. What is a nice bike like this worth if it's in good running condition? What do you think it would cost me to bring it back to good running condition. Cosmetically, the bike is in very good shape - never dropped. Has always been kept in a garage or basement.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

First, get it out of the basement.

Lots of guys have great faith in Seafoam, and the general suggestion is to run a tank with an extremely high concentration of seafoam through it.

It is really hard to say what you will encounter. I would guess that if it is in your basement, you probably took at least a few steps to make it fit for storage.

Just guessing, but I'd bet you need a new battery and some cleanup done on the battery cable ends. Change the oil and check for rust in the tank.

As far as what it's worth, now you could probably get $800 to $1,000 with the right person.
To get it running, start with changing ALL fluids, including brake fluids. Next is replace ALL rubber parts. New brake lines, new tires, new fuel and vacum lines. Brake lines should be stainless braid, as they help with the stop. You probably will spend about $500 to $750 on parts.

If I do the work and get the bike running well and bring it up to good spec, what do you think the bike is worth? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to me to invest back in the bike or just sell it as a project.

For future reference, the 82's are XJ1100J. The XS1100 was 78-81. Many parts differ between the models.

This time of the year 1200.00 next spring 2000.00. Thats if you spend some money 2 tires yours are old might look good but they have a date stamped on them. battery all rubbers in brakes and carbs as soon as you get working on the carbs and brakes you will find trouble. Electrical can be a real pain but eazy to replace the fuse box etc. Lots of work ,great bike but not a money maker.I would only fix it up if i wanted to keep it for myself Sell it as is for 500.00 now or 800.00 in the spring .JMHO
