Turn signal trouble

Not strong enough current. Check and clean ALL connections. This problem is not uncommon since these bikes don't put out a lot of juice at idle. The electrical system needs to be in good general shape to get flashers at idle rpms. Make sure the bulbs you're using are the correct wattage too.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

Ok, that makes sense because it does flash when I use it when I am riding. It only stayed solid when I checked it when the bike wasnt running. From what I've seen and from what Im reading, I think the steel wool will completely clean the connections and I shouldn't have any more trouble with that problem. Not strong enough current. As for the self canceling unit, I still havnt made progress. I can hear something clicking on and off on behind the ride side cover when I turn a blinker on (the leaf switch?), so I assume that it is working properly. Ill dive into it further when daylight comes tomorrow. Just how long does a turn signal stay on before the canceling unit shuts it off?Comment

The reed switch is mounted to the back of the speedometer. The clicking you hear behind the right side cover is the flasher unit. The turn signal stays on for an amount of time/feet based on the vehicle's speed. The turn signals will not cancel unless the bike is moving. The reed switch in the speedo tells the canceling unit that the bike is moving and how fast and it calculates the times based on that info. At faster speeds, it will flash longer. The turn signals on my bike don't work at all when the bike is not running. Only the four way hazards will flash with the bike not running. Not sure if yours has those.Ok, that makes sense because it does flash when I use it when I am riding. It only stayed solid when I checked it when the bike wasnt running. Adam,
The flasher unit (the thing that clicks when the T/S's flash) is a cylindrical aluminum barrel, strapped to the fuse panel, just below the actual fuses, under the right side cover. It's about 1" in diameter and 2" long (at least it is on mine). The PO of my bike had attempted to replace it with a car flasher, and it wouldn't work at all. Once I got the right flasher from Andreas, it works great now.1980 XS850SG - Sold
