Calipers for XJ1100

I just went to the shop and heard Resurrection resurrect. It was a cool sound.

Carbs are done so now I can go fast. But the anchor that they told me to carry with me won't slow me down enough in DC traffic so I now need a Front right caliper and a rear caliper. The PO did a trick on the bleeders. They are botched and to pull the old ones out is ugggggly.

Any hints on calipers?

Just an update, I don't think I made myself clear. Does anyone have a front right and a rear caliper for the XJ 1100 Maxim that they would want to sell.

I don't have a line on calipers for you, but just how bad is ugggggly? Any chance of backing them out with an extractor? Or maybe drilling them out, throwing in a helicoil, and putting in new bleeders? $ometimes $pare$ can get to be a little hard to find or might co$t way more than what they $hould....

another option is to drill a new hole and tap it for a bleeder commonly used for bleeding air out of automobile cooling systems.

The backing them out thing is what brought me to the opinion that I needed new ones. I have had two different mechanics trying to get them out and both of them have found that the bleeders are so hard that they can't get a hold on them. The extractors just aren't working. I think that finding a new set is cheaper than paying $55.00 an hour to drill, particularly now that I have already invested two plus hours in drilling. Don't want to throw more money into the mix on that.

I hadn't thought of drilling another bleeder hole but I am not sure there is enough room to do that on the existing unit. I'll mention that to the guys trying to help me.

as a side note...i have also bled calipers with broken bleeders by putting a block in the caliper so the piston cant come out of its bore and holdin the caliper so the brake line fitting is the highest point and loosening the line to let air out.
I know its not the "ideal" way but it has worked on cars..
You can also do it backwards by making sure your caliper is full (piston extended as far as possible) and squeezing it with a c-clamp and loosening the line.
Have done it that way too. Tho I am not sure if the bike caliper holds enough to purge out the whole hose. Im thinkin it probably does but have never tried it.

Interesting note, I have had two suppliers call me on the calipers. Both of them say that they have them in stock. The name of the dealers are Stockers and someone who didn't give their company name, needless to say I am not going to use the nameless company. But has anyone heard of Stockers from Southern California? They claim to be the biggest motorcycle used parts dealer in their area.

hi dave,drill the bleed nipples out and tap the holes to suit the nipples from a jap car (same threads larger diameter) or just buy banjo bolts with bleed nipples in them, these are available from anyone who specialises in braided hoses etc.

this all makes sense. Do you want to drill them for me? I could bring them with me in May. I haven't seen anything like that here and folks are telling me that it is too hard to drill through. Is there a special kind of bit that should be used to get through them?

One trick I use (and I actually get paid to do it) is remove the part and put it in a vise, take a cutting torch and heat the bleeder cherry red being careful nut to melt the surrounding area. Then, douse the bleeder with water thus shrinking it. Sometimes you could loosen it with your fingers after that! I've done this for many years now with great success, My next choice would be a die grinder and a carbide burr. Just take out enough of it to barely see threads and relieve the presure. Just don't mess up the seat. Garry

Where do I send the calipers to? I have a quote of 140.00 for the two calipers and would love to get them done asap. Can you help on this. Send me a PM and I will do what ever is necessary.

Now that everybody and their brother has twisted, rounded off corners and now drilled (2 hrs?) just how much of the bleeders is left sticking out? Also $140 for what? Totally rebuilt? I'm not a rebuilder I was just telling you how I remove stuck things such as bleeders or oil galley plugs and the like. How much did those 2 places want for their calipers? I take it that you aren't doing the work yourself. If you bought used parts and then still had to pay someone to go thru them, it could get sort'a pricey. I don't mind messing with getting the bleeders unstuck but if they have been pretty well wiped out and nothing is left to get ahold of it could take more time than it would be worth because after that you still gotta' rebuild them. When you do your own stuff sometimes time is not a factor. Does anybody sell rebuilt calipers for the XJ (or even the XS for that matter)? On mine mine I was lucky enough to get everything apart and cleaned up enough that I didn't need to buy anything, but had I been doing them for someone else I wouldn't even have dreamed of doing them like that!(we're talking brakes man, liabilty etc...) Peoples old ladies and such tend (surviving ones that is) to sue the the heck out of whoever they can when needed! ha ha lol Garry

They wanted 140 for used unrebuilt with who knows what for bleeders on them. I asked one group and they said they would get back to me if the bleeders were freed up but they never called back. The next company wanted 150 for two. They wouldn't guarantee them in any way shape or form. So 140 for what is a good question.

As far as what to get ahold of, nothin there. The nubs that were there are gone and so it is like nightmare city with these bleeders. We'll get it done just don't know when or how much it would cost until then.

Try the local bone yards, I have found them. you will not find any in the shops.
