  • Painting Tank & Winterizing

I am going to get my tank painted, the only trouble is it is full.
I am going down to the bike show in Toronto the 3RD week in Dec.
tht is when I am going to give him the tank & side covers(what Kind of paint should I buy & where)?Should I take the fuel out a week before to let the tank dry?I am putting sea foam in the tank and run it for a while, and turn the pet cocks of.Should I let the bike run untill it stops.Should I fog after that?
Here is a silly Question. What is the proper way to drain the tank?

    Hi Sandy,
To answer the proper way to drain the tank is to fire her up and ride as far and fast as you can through the twisties if possibe
I know you were looking for serious answer. Disconnect the hose to the carburettors and move the petcock lever to "Prime" Drain in to a clean container. When most has drained out remove the tank and turn it upside down to drain the remainder though the filler hole.
Traditionally a few of us attend the TO Bike show on the Saturday. I expect a post shortly on time and meeting place. I don't recall the tank looking bad do you just want another colour or you could try buffing the old paint to a wonderfull shine

      Drying out.

      Hi Sandy,
what Phil said. And after that take the petcocks off to shake the last drops of gas out then borrow SWMBO's hair dryer to blow the vapours out.
As to what paint to buy, is this a buddy paint job or a professional one? Either way he'll most likely know better than you do what paint works best and where to buy it.

If you are going to remove it and drain the gas you may want to spray some WD40 or something like that inside and coat it so it doesnt rust.During the winter a lot of people recommend leaving them full of gas with a stabilizer so it doesnt rust. JAT

I put a can of Sea Foam in the tank.Ran it untill it got warmed up then turned the pet cocks off and let it run until it started to sputter.
I then drained the carbs.Should I have to fog still?
Should I take the spark plugs out and use a little 10w40 or fog.
I know if I fog I should turn it over a few times.Right?
Am I on the right track here.

Hi Sandy i am redoing my 82 maxim 1100 well almost done just have to put the motor back in now. I would add oil to the cylinders roll the motor over so everything is coated also i would spray the inside of the tank with somthing like what was already said in another post wd40.
