Looking at it again, I notice the sissy bar and seat detail look right for an XJ i.e. "Maxim". Still a great deal for the current price.

Oops, or maybe I should say 'it is already bid way too high, considering how it looks a bit mixed up, and you'd never be able to find another left side sidecover anyways...'

OK.. Wrote the owner of the bike and asked him to check the VIN number on the steering neck to see if it was an XS with XJ parts, or vice versa. He wrote back and said the VIN tag had been scraped off and isn't there!!

Proceed at your own risk and plan to only use this bike for parts. It's too far for me to justify a parts bike only..

        Opposite side

The serial number is stamped into the metal on the rt side of the neck. Opposite side from the VIN tag. There is a place here to find out what it is with that. Search works good...

My vote is an XJ with XS parts. I had also noticed the fender and the fork cover are not an XJ. The airbox looks exactly like the one on my xs midnight special. I couldn't tell whether it had the YICS or not. The gold (with the exception of the airbox and headlight ring) all looks to be paint, not gold chrome. On the other midnights that I have seen, including virago and XS750's the grab rail under the seat was always gold chrome. The mods needed to mount an XJ seat, tank, and sidecovers on an xs frame lead me to believe that it is an XJ with some paint and some midnight special parts. I think that it looks awesome though and have thought about doing a similar paint scheme on my XJ.

To far away for me, but I would really love to own a MN XJ. Hope someone on this list gets it; that way I may see it a rally sometime.

Looked them up. According to the UK site ,XS part number finder,
                http://www.benefiscal.co.uk/model.php
Frame is a 1980SG and the engine is an '82 XJ.

He had to do some pretty good mods to get the xj seat, sidecovers, and tank to fit on the xs frame.

Guys...I'm really interested in buying this bike. I need an XS11 engine and my daily ride is an XJ11 Maxim. All the parts will fit one of my bikes. My son is at Ft. Gordon, GA about 3 hours away (approx. 150 miles). So I've got the shipping problem solved. I don't want to start a bidding war...so who am I bidding against? Be good; stay safe, Stan.

Are you saying you need an XS engine.. or just needing an engine for your XJ? This engine is an XJ engine.

I'm not interested in bidding anymore. But I do hope you take some better pics before you start stripping it. When/if I get some money soon, I'd like to build one of these midnight XJ's right.. powder coated frame and parts sent off for gold chrome. I like my bike the way it is.. but I also really like this midnight look also.

As far as shipping goes Stan, A local Enterprise rent a car has small pickups and rent them for @ $25 a day unlimited miles on weekends. I was going to use that to go get it. I think you'd have to keep the tailgate down, but it will fit. My other XJ did anyway? Just use some good straps and check them often.

I might need an XS engine. I'm trying to start an '80 XS11 midnight special and the #1 cylinder has low pressure (40 psi). The bike hasn't run for over 10 years. I added some oil into the spark plug hole and the pressure came up to 170, so I may have a stuck ring. I saw this bike on ebay and I thought it might be a good deal.

Will an XJ engine fit the XS frame? Hmm...I might need to fit the ebay bike up, but the no title and scratched off VIN numbers sound like trouble.

If I get the bike, I'll take plenty of pictures.
