reattaching the timing chain

Mechanic having a hard time keep timing chain on crank as he tries to reinstall after redoing top end of motor.any tricks or suggestions i can give him? thx for any advice

Have the mechanic start with the bike on TDC, with BOTH marks on the cam aligned with the arrows. He will then have to pull the cam chain up from both sides, pull it over the cam sprockets, and put a WIRE in as a temp. link to test the chain. Once good, he can replace the wire with the new link and peen the side plate on with the proper tool, or a ball peen hammer if that's all he has. You can THEN put in the chain tensioner, and rotate the crank 720 degrees SLOWLY to verify everything will line up once again.

it's easier with the bike on the centerstand, too, chain hangs straight down.
