Short answer is yes. However, a couple points need to be addressed.
XJ uses a handle-bar mounted choke cable. XS uses a mechanical linkage on the carbs. You will need to convert the XJ carbs to mechanical choke. Should not be difficult if you have the mechanical linkage from the old XS carbs.
XJ runs leaner jets. Reason: Yamaha came out with the YICS (balanced vacuum) system on the XJ, which could use leaner jetting. This was an attempt to comply with new government emmissions regulations that were coming out in the early '80s. Stock jets are probably to lean for the XS, so you may have to re-jet the XJ carbs. Jets are interchangeable, so you can either take the jets out of the old carbs or buy new ones. You can see a table of stock jet sizes here:
Yea I just got my set of "80 xs1100" carbs today from a guy on ebay. Noticed the choke deal right off. Then I noticed a few other minor details. Half moon cuts on the bottom of the slides, double throttle cable, bowl drains made completely differant ,even the script mikuni wasn't the same. What sucks is that I was wanting to use them while I worked over my stockers-boy was I dreamin'!! Ah well now I guess I'll build my "XJ?" carbs for performance instead. Hopefully being later model will work in my favor. Kinda liked the choke cable thing. Also I hate to give this guy positive feedback when they weren't for an "XS" Garry
I do have the old set of XS11 carbs. I have an 1981 XS 11 standard. While my carbs were being cleaned, the float pin holder on one side broke off ( in one of the carbs). I decided to see if I could get a whole bank of carbs. A set of 82 XJ1100 carbs are available.
I can change the choke linkage with no problem. I can also switch out the jets. If thats all I have to do...thats great! Thanks again.
