    That makes perfect sense! I apreciate the reference to the farm equipment and the syncro's on cages. Your description really helps me understand what's going on, and what to think about when trying to shift gears. I will play with it and see what happens. Thanks for taking the time to type it out for me.

      Update

      I just went on a bit longer run today, to get my bike inspected (so I can eventually get it registered). I was able to get all the way into 4th gear, without using the clutch! It actually shifts pretty smoothly. I'll definitely need to repair the missing 5th gear pin before I attempt a freeway run though.

      The temps were down in the 30s today, and we got our first flurries of the season. I have a full helmet, and it was kinda tricky keeping my visor from fogging while also preventing my nose from freezing. I think I'll need a new helmet that actually has decent ventiliation. The one I have is a Shoei RF200 that's probably 15-20 years old, and the padding is about shot. Maybe for Christmas...
