  • Middle drive noise

I was reading xs11's tech tips on the middle drive and his bearing failure.
I am wondering what kind of warning did the drive give (if any) before failure?
Trying not to be paranoid but I have a whine somewhere in the tranny tho cannot pinpoint it.
It resembles the sound of a bad pinion bearing on a rear wheel drive car. (only whines under noload/cruise conditions)
Just curious to see if anyone elses XS has this and how "normal"is it?

Nope... just getting weird vibes from time to time... got only 120km on mine since I rebuilt it (got it in boxes), so I don't know what normal is.

Check rear wheel bearings and pull the rubber boot back a bit to see if theres oil in there.

A bearing in the middle drive seized on the previous owner, resulting in a locked back wheel at 130 km/h. Not fun.

I replaced the bearings, did bout 20 km, checked the rubber boot and it was full of middle drive oil... replaced the oil seal in the middle drive and it's dry now...

Check the oil level in the middle drive and you should be OK. You can put the bike on center stand and spin the wheel by hand.

      Thanks for the input Strom,
I have checked inside the shaft boot and all seems well in there.Gonna check the rear bearings next. I also have a slight vibration at about 3-3500rpm in 5th. Doesnt seem to be anything to worry about..it isnt rattling teeth loose or anything like that. I took the XS to work today (about 50 miles round trip) and decided that maybe the whining may be the sound of one of the straight cut gears in the tranny. Not sure yet.
The bike only has 11,000 or so on it so it seems unlikely that the middle drive would be the culprit (if there is one)...Maybe I am paranoid Have a good one

        Hey the Schpiff,
I'd say that vibration would be called "lugging" !! I try not to run mine below 4k, if my road speed causes my rpms to drop below that I drop it a gear. In the higher gears you're putting a lot more stress on the engine when trying to run it at the low rpms. I remember reading a note from Yamaha about the cruise RPM should be about 2/3's maximum, which is around 5k !?!? But it was so long ago, that note might have been for my old 74 Yamaha TX500 4stroke twin?? I hate growing old!!!!
