  • No oil cooler or centerstand with 4-1 exhaust?

This sucks, had a 4-2 exhaust (straight pipes) but it was WAY too loud. So I pulled the exhaust (4-1) off the '78 since it won't be running for a while, and I need for the bike to be quiet so I don't piss the neighbors off when I get home from work at 12:30 am.

Centerstand won't work as it hits the exhaust pipe, and it looks like I can't hook up the oil cooler I have from my spare motor (header pipes in the way of the lines). Does this sound right?

Is there any kind of solution for these problems? Or is this just the cost of having a 4-1 system?

I have a 4-1, I think it's a kerker, no name on it so can't say for sure but it is out of the way for the centerstand. Don't know how you can till if another (model/style) will clear other than trying it.

I've got a Jardine 4 into 1, works fine with the centre stand.

I believe mine is a Kerker and I have a functional center stand. It looks like it doesn't fold up as far as it used to, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.
I know this, because Tyler knows this.

          Hey GrandPrix46

Just thinking, but how bad does the stand hit the pipes? If the stand goes up far enough there might be room to attach a standoff for the stand with a rubber bumper. As long as you have enough ground clearance, that might be an option.

Egsols, the stand would hit the pipes pretty hard. Making a bumper is a pretty good idea, but I think it'd look hideous with the stand hanging so far down!

I'll update this thread with some pics after I get off work (at midnight), I have no idea what brand this exhaust is, it's all black and says nothing on it. It must be good quality though, as the header pipes are still perfectly black.

I replaced the original 4 to 2 with a Jardine 4 to 1. It came with a center stand stop that I shortened a bit to get the center stand to ride up higher. If I didn't use the stop, the center stand would sit against the bottom of the swingarm. Not good. I mounted the stop in the unused muffler hanger hole on the left side and drilled a hole in it to accept the OEM rubber bumper from the old exhaust system. You should be able to see if it you zoom in.

Tim, Looking at the pictures of your bike, I have exactly that same exhaust on my standard (center stand and oil filter - no problems). I couldn't find any markings anywhere, and the closest thing I saw was a Mac. Thought that what it was 'till I saw your pics. Thanks for posting 'em and clearing up that mystery. Very nice lookin bike BTW.

                      Hey dbeardslee,
Yeah, it's definitely a Jardine. Brand new in the original box. I bought it from Karla Jones; Bob Jones' widow. Nice Lady. While there is no manufacturer's mark on the system itself, I believe there was a part number stamped on each header along with the numbers that indicated the installation location in each cylinder 1 thru 4.

                        Macs Vs. Jardines

When I was looking at buying a 4 to 1, I was comparing the Jardine to the Mac. The Mac has the collector welded to the headers. I think that's a better way to do it. It seems that no matter how you install the Jardines, you get a little leaking at the collector. Since the general opinion here is that Jardine is a higher quality product than Mac, I went with Jardine. I had also read of people having problems with rust and chrome peeling off on the Macs. I didn't want to have to deal with that. I never read about that with the Jardines. My Jardines haven't blued yet although people tell me it's inevitable. They turned ever so slightly golden to the first bend. My OEM headers looked the same color.

Tim - Yeah, I've definitely got the same pipes. Same markings where they slip into the collector. Personally I like the way the individual pipes slip into the collector as it allows installation of the headers one pipe at a time. I always seem to be working by myself, and it makes it a lot easier, especially with the header gaskets trying to fall out.

When I first got Betsy the pipes were badly blued, and I finally resorted to a scotchbrite pad and britemax easy cut to get it off. Over a thousand miles since cleaning them and they are starting to turn the very-light-gold you described.

I get a lot of comments on the exhaust note as well. These pipes really make her sound like she means business.

P.S. Tim - I've got the same issue with the center stand rattling around. I took a piece of heater hose and duct taped/electrical taped it to the center stand where it makes contact with the muffler bracket. Doesn't clunk anymore, but it's still kind of dangling. I don't suppose you have a close-up of the stop you made, do you?
