What year and model of XS1100 do you have?

Hey, Kurtman, welcome to the forum!

You say cylinders 1 and 4 are working, 2 and 3 are problematic. Even though you say you have spark it sounds more like an ignition problem than carburetors.

Generally, problems can be identified by which cylinder pairs are not working.

    If it's a fuel problem:
Carburetors 1 and 2 share one fuel line
Carburetors 3 and 4 share one fuel line

    If it's an ignition problem:
Spark plugs 1 and 4 share one coil
Spark plugs 2 and 3 share one coil

Check the spark plug end caps and the ends of the spark plug wires where they go into the caps.

Check the connectors under the seat at the ignition controller and ensure they're plugged in tight

Check the ignition wires at the ballast resistor/ignition coils under the fuel tank

Check for broken pickup coil wires

Some more folks will be by soon with some more suggestions -- happy hunting!

      kurtman:

If no. 3 carb kicks in at 5,000, and 2 kicks in at 2,500, it sounds as if you did not do the proper adjustment or perhaps cleaning. Go to the section down below on the opening site http://www.xs11.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=37 and start reading about the carbs. A lot of good information on adjusting and cleaning can be found there. Perhaps a through cleaning and adjustment with a good synchronization will cure your problem. Welcome.

Or, the cleaning may have been the culprit?

Did you clean them IN THE CLEANER...as in soaking in a bucket of cleaner, or did you mean to say you cleaned them WITH spray cleaner???

If soaked, then you may have damaged your butterfly shaft seals, which could cause a vacuum leak, causing them to NOT suck in fuel until you hit the higher rpms?

Hopefully, you cleaned them safely, and that it's more of an adjustment problem!?
