  • Question about pod filters only

Ok im thinking about going with pod filters on my xj1100 and was wondering if you get caught in a rain storm does it suck water and shut the motor off or make it run rough?

I haven't been in any real deluges, but in a mild rain they do ok. The worst problem I have had is after taking it to the carwash. I try not to get water on them, but sometimes, it happens. Makes it run rough for a little while

It is almost raining all the time in summer here in florida and I want to go with them but I don't want the rain keeping me broke down on the side of the road. Is there another aternative to getting a filter in there?

You won't have any problems with them in the rain. On the contrary, it will run even BETTER with the water being vaporized with the air before combustion.

The biggest problem with running rough after a car wash is your spark grounding out to the engine off of those 28+ year old plug wires.

I've been riding in torrential rains and been passed by semi trucks where I got hit with so much water, it nearly knocked me off the bike... but the motor just purrs right along. BUT.. Remember that all pod filters are not created equal!!

Before I wash my bike, I take two plastic grocery bags ( Wal-Mart works the best) and wrap them around the pod filters. Just put it on the outer one first, twist it somewhat tight at the bottom and then put the other half on the inner one. Then tuck the excess between the pair and your set! I think they should put this in the tech tips!

Speaking on Tod's (trbig) behalf, he has the XS pod filters, which are the K&N look-a-likes. Much cheaper than the K&Ns.

Mikesxs has them for $16 each ($64 for 4) or you could get them at Parts-N-More for $12 each ($48 for 4). If you get them from Mikes remember it's the 54mm ones. I asked Parts-N-More awhile back and they said they have the XS logo on theirs too.

You might have to go up a jet size if you get them also, so take that into consideration too. Read this thread.

                      Check this post out.

I got the EMGO (?) filters from some guy on Craigs list. I see them quite often on eBait as well for about $7 a piece.

The filters I got are from www.aperaceparts.com You won't find them listed, you'll have to call them. The part number for the 54mm pod filter is 005-121. They were $60 when I bought mine. But I do think I'm going to get the Mikesxs ones next time. The cheaper filters will cover some air jets without rigging up something like Ivan did in his link he posted.

I use the washer at the car wash to wash my filters... I don't cover them.. I BLAST them! lol. Ride away every time...

Scan down to the pics I posted. This will show you the difference between those cheap ones you're looking at and some better ones. You can make the cheper ones work, but you will have to rig up something like Ivan did, as I stated before.

I have the cheap pods (for now) and have been caught in a couple of downpours with no ill effect on the engine.
I know this, because Tyler knows this.
