  • Cylinder Stud Question

I am replacing the rings on a 79 XS11 Special. While fighting the cylinder off the plastic sleeves, that cover two of the cylinder studs, just crumbled. Does anyone know are those sleeve sold with the studs and are the still available? Also is it something that I should even worry about putting back?

    Thanks,
    Chevy

Same thing happened to me when I rebuilt me 79F. I didn't worry about replacing them. Just cleaned up the studs and put it back together. Almost 1000 miles and no problems.

    Cheers,
    Paul

Hmmm... That shows what I know. lol.

I have rebuilt several and didn't know about any plastic sleeves. Some have had a lot of road grime and stuff that looked like a crude cement that I had to clean up and pick away.. but never seen any sleeves??

So.. apparently they are fine without them. I have never tried to put any back on one..

You should clean them up as good as possible, and give them a heavy coat of paint to protect them from road crud. I tried to use heatshrink tubing on them, but it was too thick on the OD for the cylinder to slide down over after shrinking and I had to cut the tubing back off.

Wow I thought I destroyed what I thought were a couple plastic tubes when I tore mine down. Now I realize I did, oh well. They were so crusty that they kinda just broke down into nothing. Good to know I wasnt just seeing things.

              Well,
When I tore down my 81SH, nothing like that was seen/found. Might have been something Yamaha used in the earlier models. It's not shown in the microfiche on the web site? Just probably a rust/corrosion protective covering attempt since they are exposed to the elements!
