  • XS11 Build

Hey everybody! new to the forum and i figured i'd say hello. i'm helping a friend rebuild a 79 xs11 and the forum has been a great technical help so far. Anyway i figured i'd show you guys the start of the build.. Ok, the first pic is not the actual bike but what it looked like before we started (never took a before pic ).. the rest of the pics are after a few recent additions. So far we've stripped off the fairing and all unnecessary body parts, modified the oil cooler bracket, changed grips, added a headlight we got at a local salvage yard and turn signals from an old project bike i had (that project was rushed and will be redone), removed the air box and added pod filters, rejetted, changed any leaking engine gaskets (a few), modified a rear fender off of a 1996 virago 750 and mounted it with a few custom brackets and choice swear words, then finally figured out how to mount the nice cushy seat off of the same virago. Runs great and looks stock if you didn't know the difference (not to mention strong as hell). Here's what's next on the drawing board:
    -rebuild rear brake master cylinder
-Paint and minor body work (Black with either red or white pin striping)
-Front fender change to something paint-able
-change rear signals and redo front headlight and signals
-custom pipes (still debating on design)
    -white-wall tires
-new plugs and wires (black with either red or white pin striped wires)

Let me know what you guys think of the work in progress!! Thanks!

    Looks great.

I love the seat and rear fender mods that you have done. That is one thing I always felt was a bit lacking in the looks department. My 79Sf looks like the seat was almost an afterthought with no flowing lines.

Now that's different. Looks like the result of letting your Virago daughter go out with that XS11 boy from across the tracks You gonna lower it in the back or leave it like it is?
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

        Fairing and bags

Where in Cali are you? Any chance you would like to get rid of the fairing and bags?

Haha yeah it does look like a mixbreed. I agree 100% with you TAD. It just didn't look right. We were going to completely chop the whole rear end off and go bobber but i was looking around the garage to see what i had and it just jumped out at me. I just can't get over the fact that if none of us had ever seen an XS before you would never be able to tell it wasn't stock. The lines just follow perfectly and it looks like it was meant to be. Even the stock virago pinstripe matches the stock xs tank stripe! it definitely took some cutting and customization but it wasn't even that major. Took just a few hours start to finish! Now on to the rest of the project. Master cylinder seals came in today so those will go on tonite or tomorrow. After that's it on to paint and front end.. I'll keep you guys posted! Thanks!
