Any suggestions as to why the 30 amp fuse that seems to control the nuetral light, spedo and tach....... Tack and spedo ONLY work when bike is moving...revving it up sitting there will not register on tach, but everything else is fine.

Are you still running the old style fuse box? If so it would be time for a new one, TC has a great replacement unit.Ernie

Are you blowing the 30 amp main fuse? The only fuse I know of that has an amperage that high is the main fuse. You must have a short somewhere. If it's not the main fuse, a PO may have put a higher amperage fuse in because the right amperage fuse kept blowing. Not good. Bad connections won't usually blow fuses. Shorts blow fuses. You still need the replacement fuse box if you haven't done that yet. It's step one when chasing an electrical problem on the XS.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

The bike is in so so shape. pulling the side cover off, there are now spade type fuses in there, but not in any kind of holder...kinda crimped in with connectors.
ELECTRONICS ARE NOT MY GAME. i always shock the snot out of myself.
Will be trying to "rewire" this winter, but for now was trying to figure out which fuse it would be that deals only with the tach/spedo/nuetral light....
trying to isolate issue.
the fairing that is on bike (off for repainting) had a jumbled mess of wires up under the headlight area....all kinds of "bullet" connectors some connected, some not. just prior to removing fairing...head light wouldnt work. had to 'hotwire' it with a hot lead for accessories on fairing to turn on with key.'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"

the speedo is mechanical and will work even if the electrics are totally removed.
You say the tach only works when the bike is rolling and the neutral light don't work?
Betcha those two things have a common cause.
The only 30A fuse you should have is the main one that controls everything and if that one blows nothing works. That fuse is in it's own solitary holder under the left side cover and has just two wires going to it, both are red, the one from the battery has a red woven fabric sheath over it. From what you say, the dreaded PO has replaced the main fuse bank (that's a good thing) with a bunch of single spade fuse holders (which could be OK but not if it's been botched) but none of those fuses should be a 30A.Fred Hill, S'toon
