had buckhorn handle bars, round headlight, but square tach and speedometer gauge ,standard tank from 1978 doesn't squarely fit had special tank which came with it but lost also standard tank but rusted out. manufsactured date is march 79. what is it?

Easiest way to check is to look at the front axle. If it sits directly below the forks, it's a Standard. If the axle is in front of the forks (leading axle), then it's a Special.2H7 (79) owned since '89

You could use the Serial Number to determine what your bike started out as. Now that it's a hybrid, I guess you'l have to play it by ear.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Hi Shawn,
Thing is, forks, gas tanks, gauges, even the rear wheel swap between Standards & Specials just like Lego. Like 'Bug sez, the only sure way to see what your bike started out as is to check the frame & engine numbers. Perhaps if someone swapped in the far larger Standard gas tank they also installed the rectangular gauges to get the fuel gauge that goes with it.Fred Hill, S'toon
