  • Balancing air front fork

Right now I'm using a crappy pump with built in manometer, which obviously isn't optimal, therefore I'm trying to make a system with pump, manometer and a T-piece so the legs are equally pressurized. The company "Progressive" seems to have a balancing kit, but I'm not sure if it will fit the Yamaha air valves.
The German company Louis also has a similar system, but it doesn't specify if it includes a manometer in the system.
    Any ideas....

I am not an expert....but FWIW I just turn down the pressure on the air compressor and it is very close..I also use a digital gauge for accurate readings...If you do not have access to a compressor..you may want to invest in a new hand pump... I seem to always be checking the air pressure until I go the digital gauge...I hope this helps...I am sure some one else will have some in put...Happy Air Forks to ya...

      Air forks

My forks have an after-market gauge with a bicycle type valve beside it in the housing and two small bore air lines leading to the tops of the forks (terminating in small ferrule ring nuts). Means that the forks are balanced and the on-board gauge gives a constant pressure readout. Sorry, don't know the manufacturer as it was on there when I got the bike in about 1992. If you can find a similar set up, my experience is that is a pretty effective mod and very easy to set up and check.

Alternatively, I've read around here that using Progressive fork springs is a good replacement when upgrading from the original spring (which after all this time almost always need it). With Progressive springs the advice is that air forks probably don't need to be pressurised at all.

I did the Progressive spring installation a month or two ago, but haven't had a chance to evaluate the results ...( carb work is much needed )

Does anybody know if the air valves are a special Yamaha valve or a generic type?
I searched the owner's manual and Clymer's, but I just can't find any info regarding the valves.
Where the %"&# do you find fittings for them?

Gisle: I have seen the Progessive air balancing kit on an XS11, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Shack: I have noticed a slight bit of oil residue come out of the fork air valve before when I have checked the pressure with a conventional guage, so I have been reluctant to use my digital guage. Have you ever noticed that or had any problems with using your digital guage?

UK1.1s: Let us know what you think of the Progressive fork spring once you get an opportunity to evaluate it.
