    what is my bike

i believe i have a 1980 xs 1100 midnite special, but ive noticed theres also a 1100S, 1100L, 1100G, etc. I looked at my VIN but can't tell by that. Does anyone have any suggestions to how I can find out what type of bike I have.

    Thanks!

Hey, CJ, welcome from another Canuck! Check this tech tip for a list of serial numbers for the various years. Also, have a look here for a good article laying out the differences between the various models.

Thanks that helped ... kinda. The dealer says that I have a special edition, accordingly to this I have a G, but when we looked at the specs, its kinda off. Ummmm. The only thing that matched on the specs was the colour - ruby red.

if it is ruby red, then it isn't a midnight special

          which model?

Post a picture so we can check it out. Someone could have "customized" your bike with parts from other models.

I agree with Phil. Many of these bikes have been rebuilt/repaired with whatever parts people can find. You end up with a lot of "hybrid" bikes. After close to thirty years of repairs/modifications, there can be very little original left.

So what are the first 3 letters/numbers of your vin#?
And do the numbers on your frame match the numbers on your engine?
