  • XJ1100 cosmetics and gear problem

Hey everyone, I am new to this site and also the proud new owner of a 1982 Yamaha XJ1100. This is a great site, the Tech info is very helpful!
First question: My XJ pops out of 1st gear with the machine gun effects. I am planning to tear the tranny down this winter. If the dremel fix is not possible for whatever reason can gears still be purchased for these bikes at a "reasonable" cost?

Second question: What is supposed to cover the little toolbox on the back of the bike? Just the license plate or is there some piece of trim that I am missing? I can see the toolbox under the seat. I can't find any rear photos of this bike on the net. Any help would be appreciated!!

You'll see an occasional tranny for sale on ebay. I bought one for 40 bucks. You might be able to find the gears new at a dealer also but they will probably run about 125 bucks each on average. My OEM parts source Yamaha Parts has 4th available but first on backorder... or was that the other way around? Well anyway, they can be had new if you search around. No info on the toolbox thing but I'm sure some XJ guys will let you know that. Welcome to the site, and good luck. There's plenty of guys here to help you out if you get stuck on anything. Great community of people!

      tranny gears

      1st gear - P/N 2H7-17211-00-00 $98.12
      4th gear - P/N 2H7 17241-00-00 $95.94

You have to replace both as they interlock. Here's where I get them... part #'s 15&19 on the fiche.

There is a license plate holder that the license plate attaches to that is bigger than the plate... but yeah, if you look at the back seat, over the top of the plate holder, you can see the tool box there.

Bikerphil is absolutely right. The backordered gear is the middle drive gear. Oops. Thanks Bikerphil.

Hey thanks guys, its good to know I can still get the gears if mine are toast when I tear it down.
Ya, I see my bike is just missing the license plate holder. The plate is screwed to the toolbox. I'll have to make one.

              Same only different

Welcome . My setup is quite different but I made a cover for that area out of a black 4 litre oil jug cut in half the long way and trimmed to fit . Since its black it doesnt show and keeps the moisture/rain/mud off my TCI which is now about where your toolbox is . I never knew there was one there on the stockies .
              Some pix (probably no help).
              My bike:

If you find this - hang on to it

              TCI's are like hens teeth

Mine has a homemade license bracket on the stock support
