  • correct part number for fork seal

I blew out a fork seal a few days ago on my '80 XS1100SG and I have been looking for a source for seals. If I go to Bike Bandit I get different part numbers for the Standard and Special. The Standard seal is about half the price of the Special Seal which is $28.00. If I go to Yamaha I get the same part number except for the first 3 digits which I assume designates the year. I can't imagine a different design for the Standard vs Special. Anyways, can someone verify that this is the correct part number for the '80SG:
    2H7-23145-00-00
    Thanks,
    joe

    Hi Joe,
a whole week no forks because Mr Stupid at the Yamastore didn't listen. The Special seal measures 37mmx58mmx11mm while the Standard seal is 37mmx59mmx9mm. Yes they ARE different and NO the other one won't fit. Nor is either of them a stock commercial size so the usual stepping into B&T to get them off the shelf at half the price like the front wheel bearings won't work.

It seems we already have a discrepancy as far as dimensions of the seal

          seals

Fred put 58 + 59 mm for O.D which is incorrect. The Yamaha part # for the 80SG (special) is 3J6-23145-00-00.

according to Yamaha the 3J6 designation is for the '81 SH. Can I assume that the seal is the same for '79, '80 and '81? When I inquire about the front fork for an '80 on Yamaha's site there is no parts list.

Gurus do not make mistakes. Yamaha will probably change the dimensions for Phil

                OK Bikerphil,
I will eat sh1t and die. You are right, that's 48 for the Special & 49 for the Standard.
What's important is that the clowns at Yamaha used different seals to do the exact same job. If any of my designers had pulled that stunt they'd be back to detailing re-bar until they smartened up.

                  2H7, 3J6, etc.

On the genuine Yamaha seals, as long as the 23145 is the 2nd set of numbers, you should have the correct seal. I get the sizes mixed up too and always have to go look 'em up. Oh, and Yamaha sells the seals as each instead of pairs. I found this out the hard way with an extra week of bike down time.
