    Will outlast youth and enthusiasm. I think I finally made a big breakthrough on the carb situation. I was riding home, and was thinking about my carbs when I decided to try the test a mechanic told me about. I pinned the throttle and when it started crappin out I pulled the choke to the first detent. Got a little worse. Pulled to the last detent and it almost died.

    Get home and plugs look like crap, very black and sooty all across the board. Drop the needles one click and turn the idle air screws in 1/8th of a turn. Set the idle back to 900 and go for a ride. Before I would be cruising at about 80 and if any load was put on the engine, it would act up. Now, I can cruise at 80 and it runs smooth and pretty, even when I crack the throttle and apply a load. It starts acting up when I twist the throttle more than halfway open, so I think I am still a little rich. BTW, plugs are cleaning up and looking slightly more towards tan instead of super black.

    Did you re-sync the carbs?

      Grimace - Is it a little soft out of the hole? Just a thought, but somewhere in the plethora of info available here, there's a post that states 'soft and boggy on the bottom is a sign of float height being too high' (when the carbs are in their proper orientation). Betsy used to like to foul 'em pretty bad, and adjusting the float height to 26mm helped.

      Also, the NGK BP6EIX Iridium plugs are about as close to foul-proof as they come. They're expensive (about $7.50 ea. US) but they provide a hotter spark. The other thing that really helped the quality of the spark was Mikes XS high-output coils. My $.02.
      I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

        Yeah, everytime I take the carbs off and make any adjustment, I resync. I also have the floats set per the ken talbot method, and I have the upgraded coils from mikesxs.

        I just thought I would share that I am getting closer to enjoying riding instead of it being a pain.
