  • What year is this carb?

Well I got rebuild kits for my 1979 XS1100 SF and the parts didn't look right. I started looking at parts diagrams and it seems that the carbs on my bike are not from a 79 XS1100. The tell tale sign is that the float valve seat is not threaded. Mine just pull out, no threads on the seat or in the place where the seat goes. Are these carbs originally from another year of XS or off another bike?

    Here are all the innards:

This float valve seat tipped me off:

Mine looks a lot like the parts in this rebuild kit. Maybe I have 80-81 carbs? Any way to know which rebuild kit to use?

With the plastic floats, rubber-tipped needle valve, and blunt ended pilot screw, I'd say they're from an '81 Standard. Looks like you're missing an o-ring, though...

I think you are correct.. My 79 Special has metal floats and the pointed seats....Good luck..

looks like my 81 special (now i am a little bit reassured that my idle mix screws are supposed to be blunt...lol) I am pretty sure the screw in seats stopped in 79...(search the threads here for more info)

Hmmmm... So how do I tell if it is an 81 standard or special?

I believe the carbs were the same for both the Standard and Special in 1981. If you check out the microfiche at Bike Bandit you will find the part numbers to be the same for both models.
