I thought I would pass this along. Here's a link to an online painting course that has some pretty good how-to on motorcycle painting. It's billed as a three day course, and this link goes to day 2, which is the actual nitty-gritty of prep and paint. The day 1 video covers the materials required, and day 3 gets into custom mixing colors (VERY interesting).
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

      Paint

Hey Doug bike looks good. the Finex gum your looking at is good to work wityh at home. Main thing is to keep it clean they make some nice bag liners for the guns so you remove after spraying and only have a 5 minute clean up. another little Tip is with HVLP guns is to make sure you use a HVLP air line they flow alot more CFM than a standard line will.
Good Luck and its all in the prep work good thing about paint you can always sand and redo and on a bike its not to bad.

Paintman - Thanks for the tips and the feedback on the Finex. I didn't know they had lines specifically for HVLP. Are they bigger or smaller than a standard line? I used a 100' 3/8" rubber line on it and a pressure regulator at the gun. The main reason I wanted to use HVLP equipment is so I don't give the cars in the neighborhood a case of chicken pox - I paint in the back yard.

          Air lines

yes the HVLP is a larger inside diameter and the shorter the hose the less drop you will have at the gun. and anotehr benifit of HVP guns is teh hi transfer rate of paint they are very efficent saves ya money.

Paintman - Yeah, I knew that long run was going to hurt me, but I had to get out to the middle of the yard. Compressor draws too many amps for an extension cord, so I cranked the pressure up at the source, and adjusted it down at the gun. I'm thinkin' a little additional reducer over what is recommended might help the material to flow a little better too. Any thoughts?

I got another little paint gun I'm going to play with real soon - an air brush. I'll have to practice with it, but I thought it might be a good tool to hit some of the small rust spots on the frame. One of these days I'd like to pull the motor and do it right, but for right now I just don't want to see rust.

I wonder what it would look like with some gold ladies on the tank like the truckers put on their mud-flaps
And you thought I was joking...
