Today after days of major pains and headaches I finally got old blaze to start. My problems were many but is getting better. My problem now is the bike will start and idle on full choke but if I take the choke off or give it gas the engine dies. Will not start or run with choke not full on. Any ideas? I`am going to check fuel petcocks and lines tomorrow hope its not in carbs. Thanks

Mine acts like that every Spring, for a few minutes. I think some moisture, a cold engine, 6 month old stabilized gas, all contribute to a rough start. Today I started my 78E for the first time since October. It would only run at full choke, big time hesitation, then it smoothed out, dropped the choke to 1/2, same thing, had to coax it along. Finally as the motor got hot it smoothed out and I could open the choke. It takes 10-15 minutes to get it 'awake.'
Try fresh gas, new spark plugs, clean, not plugged or blocked air cleaner, no squirrel treats in the exhaust (don't laugh, I know how many acorns can fit in a megaphone.)
This assumes you have no problems with the carbs. If it has been some time, the old triple clean is probably in order. Blocked / gummed jets, water collected in the fuel line, holey diaphrams, synchronization, plugged petcock screens, and so on could all be suspect. The carb experts can chime in here any time...Marty in NW PA

The bike sat in a shop for over a year so I guess will have to check everything once and then double check.I know it`s in the fuel system some where.Going to check petcocks and lines tomorrow.Might as well check carbs real good wile into it. Thanks Any other ideas? not used to CV carbs.Bill Harvell

Today I got it running. My problem was a kinked fuel line on right side. The bike still sounds a little rough, the idle is not quite right. Part of that I think is the timeing a little off and each carb needs a little fiddling with also.I have a service manual but the thing on some things are about as clear as mud.Any one have any ideas? By the way before it started running good(would take throddle)I thought they would call fire dept.Burned old stuff out and cleared itself out.ThanksBill Harvell

Today I got carbs dailed in and took care of fuel lines- more or less double checked everything.Got battery on charger,to bring to full charge if everything checks out will take for short ride tomorrow.I still have one gripe though the fuel lines are still a pain. Will see later if they can be inproved. Thanks for input.Bill Harvell

I just pulled my XS1100 out of storage. I can't ride for another month due to recovering of cervical spinal fusion unrelated to riding. I did manage to get the old beast started and run for about a minute then died. I couldn't restart so I gave up for today. I am lucky to have time to straighten out fuel system. I bought bike last fall for 400.00 in decent running shape with vetter fairing and leather saddle bags. I rode it several times then snow came. Very excited to started riding again after long absence.

Today I put battery back in and started my bike.Ran real rough, would not idle. Fooled with timeing advance and got it to smooth out.Still have to get the idle up some, will run if give gas but the moment I take my hand off gas it dies. Will play with it some more.Ready to ride some the snow has melted (4 inches) and supposed to get around 74 degrees tomorrow. Good luck.Bill Harvell
