So sunday I went over to GK45242's house to synch his carbs. While I was there the power went out, trees blew down across his street, and on the way back they say it was a cat 1 hurricane - in Ohio! 76mph wind gusts. I was going across I275 leaned over like I was in a hard turn - only I was going straight! I was never so glad to have 600 lbs. under me. Old Betsy chugged through it like it was just another sunday ride. God bless XS11's!

Phil - It was crazy! I think the harriest part was when I got off the highway. The power lines were down on state route 22 and there were big loops of loose line blowing out across the road. I had to time it and sprint from telephone pole to telephone pole. Once again, XS11 power didn't let me down. At one point I was sitting in stopped traffic on a two-lane residential street when a big wind gust came through. I heard the tree directly across the road from me crack - almost sounded like a gunshot. The only place I had to go was through a ditch out into some open area in a guys yard. I was thinking to myself 'this isn't a dirt bike, but if that tree moves I'm gonna do a passable impersonation!' Luckily it didn't move while I was sitting there. That's a ride I won't soon forget.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

What an adventure, those power lines sound pretty crazy.. just a thought, when ya have to go into dirt bike mode.. Get your feet on them rear pegs and put your weight on your feet not your rear.. amazing the difference.. you could go right thru dune sand if ya get the knack for it.. glad everyone made it ok...XS1100 F/G (79 Bike/80 Motor)

Clark - Thanks for the tip. My preferred dirt-bike-mode is to stand up on the foot pegs. I keep my center of gravity high and in the middle of the bike and I keep it loose. I don't fight her - I just let her buck. Works good on unexpected rough spots in the road too.
P.S. Everyone didn't make it OK. There were 4 people killed around here sunday on bikes.Last edited by dbeardslee; 09-18-2008, 09:28 AM.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Fortunately you made it and were able to write about it, as those are the kinds of rides that let you know just exactly how alive you really are and exactly much you really wish to remain so!

2 of them were on one bike when a tree fell on them. Don't know what happened to the other 2, but the number I heard on the radio was 4. The storm knocked down a LOT of trees.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

years ago I was driving home in a big storm in the UK, except I was in a VW beetle and with no weight on the steering I was getting blown everywhere. I actually got stopped by a cop who thought I was drunk lol.Si Parker
