Hey guys is it possible to widen the stock rear wheel on the back of a 79 xs1100? I am plannen on dropping off my bike soon to metric customs in clinton oklahoma and need to have the wheel widend to accomodate a 200 rear tire. I would like to keep the factory style whee's (since they look kinda cool) and that way i won't have to change the front tire too. But does any1 know if it's possible? If so what am i looken at price wise for this? Well anyways, thanks for the help fellas. Josh.

Without going to a chain you can't do much. The wider tire will not clear the drive shaft. Even the stock size in some brands have been reported to rub on the drive shaft side of the swing arm.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

i am gonna go chain drive. I'm just waiting on funds to allow me to purchase the kit from xschop. But yeah i'm goen chain drive on it. Once i have the kit and the wheel(s) it's goen to metric customs in clinton oklahoma to get hardtailed. So i need to get the parts first then i can start the cool part!
But i was only asking cause if widening a wheel is as cheap or cheaper then new wheels would be then i'd rather just run the same wheel's only wider in the back. So thats why i asked. But yes i'm going chain drive and i want at least a 180 rear if not i want to put a 200 on it in the back. And chop says his kit will allow up to a 220 rear. So i should be good.
Just wanting to know which would be more cost effective widening my stock wheel or getting 2 spoke style wheels and making them fit.Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

I'd go with two new (eBay used ) wheels.
Newer wheels are 30 to 40 % lighter than our stock 11's
Also will probably cost a few hundred to have the XS wheel widened which might get you forks/brakes and wheels on eBay.
(wait till it gets wet/snowy and cold, prices will drop )

xs650special rims are chain drive and virtually identical looking to XS11. find one of them and KOSMAN Specialties will widen it for about $500.
you can find them at www.kosman.net
Here are the exact words from them regarding this:
I showed the wheel to my machinist and he told me it would be no problem keeping it a 16" wheel. The conversion would cost $525 plus the freight and take around 5-6 weeks. Running the radial tire will be no problem as well. If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me.Yamaniac
