  • Ignition problem?

Hello, I just finished rebuilding my carbs on my 79 xs1100. It runs great for about 10 minutes (til it is warmed up) then it loses power and cuts off. Let it cool and it'll start up briefly and then repeats the problem. Any suggestions, this is my first 1100, had it for only two weeks and itching to ride it. Buck B

Stick around. I am sure that will get some replies, as this is a problem that has been discussed several times.
If I remember, one of the guys had a similar experiance, and found it to be a bad coil. It tested ok, but crapped-out after getting warm.
Have you tried to use the "search" tab at the top right corner of this page?

there has been some problems with the gas tank not venting, try to ride with the gas cap unlatched, and see if your problem goes away. If so disassemble the fuel cap, clean and retest.
If that does not work, test for spark when the bike is running bad. You can by an adjustable spark tester at any parts store for less than $10.00.
If your spark plug caps are old, cracked or out of spec, replace them with NGK caps. If they look old replace them anyway, they are like 4.00 a piece.
      hope this helps

Try the pick up coil wire test.

Check the cam timing. And do a compression test. I had the same problem, the intake cam was out of sync and as a result some air blew back into the carbs, which filled the airbox with petrol and the fuel mixture became rich, flooding the engine.
1st I thaught it was electrical... I even got me another TCI unit, coils,....
When syncin the cams, the arrows on the cam-down-holding-thingies should point to dots (small holes) on the cams.
Be careful, I had two bent valves.
