  • Not the same old kickstart questions

    Ok so I just got an 850 kicker to put on my 1100 and noticed some "strangeness" when I was playing with it. Keep in mind I've never had anything besides a single quad that was kick start so my experience is limited!

    1. After I kick the lever stays "down" and I have to manualy rotate it back "up". Is this normal or is that spring behind the side cover on wrong?
    If its not normal can someone point me to a picture or description of how that spring should be, because I swear I checked it (meaning looked at it and thought "yeah that looks right" because I wasn't sure how it was supposed to be.) when I did the 2nd gear fix.

    2. The kicker only works with the clutch lever out. Is this common on bikes? On my quad I can start it "in gear" by holding the clutch in while kicking. On the XS if I hold the clutch in there is no resistance on the kicker. Just wondering if that is how it should be.

    psycoreefer;

    The kicker spring needs to be pre-tensioned so it holds the lever up. When you install the spring, rotate the shaft counterclosckwise as you push the gear teeth home. then check the flat on the shaft to be sure it's in the proper position for the lever installation, install clutch cover.

    These bikes operate the kick through the clutch, so the clutch must be engaged for the kicker to work.

        If the spring is the same as the 11's, the hook of the spring goes over a spot built into the housing.

        You should be able to check it through the oil filler hole with a flashlight.

          Thanks

          I should have been more clear, I've put the 850 kick start lever on my 1100. I like the look and I think its cool to kick. I think randy may have hit it on the head with the "pre-tensioning" as I don't remember there being any tension on the spring the way I installed it.

            I got your meaning, 'cause i did the same thing with my 79F. The retro look is cool, sometimes i just use it for the hell of it. i also used the 850 kicker 'cause it has the folding arm. Like MRO wrote, you hook the spring, turn a few turns counterclockwise and shove the gear home

              Hmmm...i don't think I know that "MRO" guy ...
              but mro would only "pretension" the kick starter about 180 degrees (like it recommends in the manual)

                BTW

                My XSperience has only been with 1100 kick starters.
                Is the 850 spring different?

                  I don't know what the 850 spring or internals look like. I've got a 1100sf and I'm using the kick start lever (external arm part) on it because I can leave it on and fold it out of the way. Thanks for the help guys.
