wow $185! Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I'm going to check around a little more but doubt I will find anything here that cheap. Sometime when the weather gets better maybe I'll take a ride down to St Joe. St Joe & Back in one day should be no problem.

I have been reading the various posts regarding shocks.
How does one know when the shocks need replacing? In a car it is pretty obvious, but are the symptoms the same for a bike?
I have just gone through everything on the front end, Progressive springs, fork seals, fork brace, wheel bearings, and rebuilt calipers.
Logic tells me that 24 year old shocks have gotta go, but is there anything else to go on?
      TIA,
      Mike

        newmaac,
My shocks had almost 40k on them and they got so bad that I was loaded down going to a rally, only about 40 miles away, when the bike got so squirrelly I couldn't ride it. I left all my camping gear at the rally and rode back home to get my truck.

        beech,
Let me know if you want to get a pair of those progressive shocks and I'll check the price and have our local shop order them for you.

          thaks Nomad,
On the freeway, it's kinda lose, like it wants to follow the grooves. Someone told me that that feeling could just be because my tires are not "scrubbed-in" yet. I dunno. I have a new set of Kenda Challengers, with only about 300 miles on them.
I just finished the front end, and as soon as I get all of the air out of the brakes, I will see what it feels like.

            newmaac,
I just finished my 80SG this spring. I rebuilt the frt & rr brks, changed fork oil, new rear shocks, new tires, complete paint and now just waiting for my seat and fork brace. Hopefully this week on both. Mine showed tremendous improvement the first day I took it out. No more following road groves and no more wallowing thru corners. Can't hardly wait for my Tkat. Hope this helps your decision making. Good luck!!

I've just found out that Koni shocks are now being made by Proven Products under the name of Ikon. Proven Products bought the original tooling and commenced production in Australia with KONI's blessing.
Great news, Mike! I searched online and found a reference at Bob's BMW web site in Maryland:

              Koni shocks have been reincarnated!

There's also a Proven Products web site:

              Proven Products Pty Ltd.
              http://www.proven.com.au/ikon.shtml
              Email: sales@proven.com.au

              Phone: (02) 6040 9955 - Fax: (02) 6040 9911

I e-mailed them to see if they'll be making a shock to fit our bikes and if there is a US distributor.

              Thanks for the tip!

I was concerned that this might get worse by changing the rake and trail, but it improved greatly. It seems like a much lighter bike at slow speeds, I really like it. And as I've said in other posts, I can't hardly believe how it handles now at speed. I'm waiting for my Tkat brace, should see it early next week, to see how much more improvement it can make. I might just have to go out and play with the young sport bike boys.

Thanks Nomad, thats the info I was alookin for...(the handlbar heavy reference).. equally surprising is lowering the tail made it better on both ends of the spectrum.

Check out Hagon shocks at www.davequinnmotorcycles.com. I'm looking at shocks too and they sound like a good option as well.

Lord Grizzlon, did you ever put the partsnmore shocks on your bike? Did they work alright? If you could do it all over again, would you save up money for Progressives/Konis/Hagons?
