I am at a loss, I have fixed everything with help from this site. I have been thru every connection cleaned and e-lube, checked the relays and switches for function, replaced the fuse holders, re soldered bad connections, Now a new quirk has developed. I only get power to the coils when the starter button is held. I used to have an old Dodge that did the same thing and it was the ballist resistor. This bike never had one. and no connector for one. It is almost ready to ride, but !! Does any one have an a clue.

    Hey there YamaTweety,

Glad you have been able to find useful restoration info here!!

But no aspersions on your knowledge, but are you sure it's an 81H model, have you verified that with the serial #'s thread in the MISC forum?? It's not an LH...MNS is it?? In the 81LH they used some of the fancy electrical interlocks that was put to use with the 82XJ....IIRC, will have to check but possibly a clutch relay?

If so..then you're right, the 81 uses the 4RO TCI and does NOT have a ballast resistor. The TCI routes power to the Coils, but since it doesn't use a BR, then there's no other special routing for the running mode vs. the starting mode...that I can recall, will have to review the wiring diagram to be sure!?

You could run a temp jumper from the AUX terminal of the fuseblock to the + terminals of the coils removing the OEM terminal connectors, and see if it will keep running? If it does, then the TCI isn't routing power in the running mode, and so it may be defective??

Are you missing power, signal or both to the coils. If it's just power, and you have a signal, I recommend doing the Coil Repowering Mod and supplying your own power. However you would need to find another switched power source for the relay than the stock coil power wire.
