Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever checked their valve clearances 10 times and always found them to be within spec but still have a tick ? I find that checking my clearances with lobe 180 away from valve shim is good but if I rotate the engine so that the valve has opened and closed, just after it has closed, on the side of the lobe before the bottom, the clearance is much larger until it gets back to the bottom.

Any feedback would be appreciated because eventhough she runs good, the sound is driving me crazy !!

You might check the integrity of the exhaust gaskets. One of mine leaked once and the ticking stopped when the nuts were tightened forr that head pipe.

Yeah - got that problem on another bike.

Had it ....errrr... around 8 years, tried to re-shim probably three times and also had the valve seats recut around 5 years ago. One exhaust valve is still noisier than the rest. On inspection the valve shows no sign of burning, so I'm living with it.

If it is a bit of 'blow by' at an exhaust gasket, my quick check tip is to use a Zippo lighted to fault find. Wave the flame near all the exhaust clamps with the engine running - TAKE CARE - not to touch the hot pipes! You should see the flame flicker near a blowing header pipe.

Try not to use the above next to leaking fuels tanks, pools of petrol (gas), small children, etc etc etc
