  • New foot pegs - Grinding off the old?

I just picked up some pegs for the front feet. It looks like I will need to grind off the old "bolt" that holds the actual peg on. I can use the current bracket and a new nut and bolt.

Are there any cautions or advice on how to remove the old peg? I am nervous about grinding it while it is on the bike (Fuel is explosive, etc...) but would like to make the move with as little down time as possible.

If the prospect of sparks scares you, you could always drill the head off the bolt. IIRC, it's not so much a bolt as a pin or a long rivet.

It is a long rivet, and if you want to remove the rear engine mount bolt, you can remove the pegs from the bike to grind the bottom of the rivet off. I use a clevis pin in place of the rivet when reassembling.

        Caution!

That bolt is also the rear motor mount, not just a bolt holding the foot peg on!

Place the bike on its center stand, place a floor jack under the motor with a block of wood between.

Slightly jack up the motor to relieve weight off that bolt.

Place a good strong box end wrench on the bolt head on the right side foot peg.

Get a good 1/2" 6-point socket and a long breaker bar and carefully break the nut loose on the left foot peg, without lifting the bike off its center stand or the jack.

Once its loose, and the jack is relieving the weight of the motor, the bolt should slide right out, freeing both foot peg brackets.

        Good luck.
